Analysis, book reviews and photography from Abkhazia and the wider Caucasus --- updates when time permits

Full results of Abkhazia's 2011 census made public

The results of the 2011 census in Abkhazia have at last been released in book form on 4 October, and the ethnic break-down has been added to the invaluable ethno-kavkaz.narod.ru. As I predicted in December (when full results were not yet known) the very high population growth since 2003 is for the most part due to an increase of the number of Abkhaz in Sukhum by eighteen thousand people, adding almost 50% to its population. My previous criticism that this sharp increase is improbable still stands, and the complete absence of any figures for Central Asian gastarbeiter remains mysterious.
